requirements. Failure testing is the process of validating whether or not the combination of Rhino, Resource Adaptors and
Application displays appropriate characteristics in failure conditions.
Open Cloud Rhino is intended for use in performance and failure testing. There are many different performance measurements
that may be of interest, and different performance targets that are required. These are typically dictated by the requirements of
the application.
We provide recommendations for minimum and basic performance and failure testing hardware in a general sense, as well as
providing an example for a particular application.
Recommended Requirements
Here are the Open Cloud Rhino SLEE 1.4.3 minimum and recommended hardware requirements.
Note that the general hardware requirements do not include load generation hardware or SS7 connectivity. Please refer to the
specific application example for an SS7 capable Rhino configuration.
Number of Sun machines in the Rhino cluster – Minimum 3, Recommended 3.
Number of UltraSPARC III CPUs in each Sun machine – Minimum 2, Recommended 4.
Speed of each UltraSPARC III CPU – Minimum 750MHz, Recommended 1GHz+.
RAM requirements of each Sun machine – Minimum 1 GB, Recommended 2GB+.
Hard disk requirements of each Sun machine – Minimum 2GB, Recommended 9GB+.
Network interface requirements of each Sun machine Minimum 100MB, Recommended 100MB or 1GB Switched
Ethernet.
A.2.4 Application Example
The example of VPN or Mobile Centrex is used to illustrate a possible hardware configuration. This configuration is capable
of running a VPN or Mobile Centrex application at 300+ Call Setups per second, with 3-way redundancy and low latency. In
this configuration each Rhino machine is running at approximately 60% CPU utilisation, and the SS7 signalling links are the
bottleneck for latency and throughput. The application is doing 1500+ ACID transactions per second (i.e. 1500+ JAIN SLEE
events per second).
